1981年慶應義塾大学経済学部卒業。1981年株式会社井筒屋。1991年慶應義塾大学経営学修士。1996年慶應義塾大学経営学博士。1996年流通科学大学商学部助教授、1999年教授, 2005年神戸大学経済経営研究所教授を経て2007年慶應義塾大学大学院経営管理研究科教授。この間、1997年スタンフォード大学ビジネススクールに客員研究員として留学。2008年（財）企業経営研究所所長。2010年よりAsia Pacific Journal of Management誌のAssociate Editor、Journal of International Management誌のEditorial Board。1999年中小企業研究奨励賞（商工総合研究所）、2004年及び2006年Winner: Best Paper Awards （Asia Academy of Management Conference）、2010年国際ビジネス研究学会賞、義塾賞。
